Alhaurin el grande - The essential information guide by Platinum Properties.
Alhaurín el Grande
Traditional and unspoilt
Population: 21,070Distance from Malaga airport: 22 km (14 miles )
What's it like in Alhaurín el Grande?
Alhaurín el Grande is a bustling village nestled on a northern slope of the Sierra de Mijas mountain range, Alhaurín el Grande has been a bastion to travellers and settlers for centuries, drawn to the region by its fertile soil, mineral-filled hills and stunning rural views. Despite this attraction, which has brought the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans and Arabs to all leave their mark on the town, Alhaurín el Grande has largely escaped a tourist inundation even though it rests just minutes from the Costa del Sol and no more than 30 kilometres from the regional capital of Málaga.
Situated on a hillside overlooking the Guadalhorce Valley, a short drive up a winding mountain road from Mijas and Fuengirola, Alhaurín el Grande is a charming whitewashed village, replete with remnants of its rich history, including a Moorish fort and archway as well as Roman columns in front of the town hall. Narrow avenues and small, well-maintained plazas make up a cosy town centre full of shops and cafes selling local fare while the rolling hills that surround Alhaurín el Grande provide a unique sense of wide open space to the area and a breathtaking backdrop to the historic village.
While still firmly attached to its historic roots, Alhaurín el Grande has seen a restrained level of growth, both architecturally and culturally, as the town welcomes modern additions to its commercial centre and plays host to a series of festivals and performances throughout the year. Ideally located a short distance from many of Andalucía’s most popular destinations, including Granada, Ronda and Marbella, Alhaurín el Grande is an ideal rural escape within easy reach of the Coast.
Healthy, wealthy and wise
While certainly a valued commodity to many, Alhaurín el Grande’s rural setting provides a small town selection of public services in comparison to its neighbours. However, short trips to Coín, Mijas, Marbella or Fuengirola are sure to meet whatever needs cannot be met in town. Alhaurín el Grande does offer special pet care with both veterinarian and grooming offices located within town. Bi-lingual educational opportunities are locally available for children up to six at the Kiddie Kollege, while a number of international programmes can be found in Fuengirola, Torremolinos and Marbella, which is now more accessible thanks to a newly completed south-western road. This motorway also provides an easier route to Marbella’s Costa del Sol Hospital. Additional public and private medical services can be found at the Virgen de la Victoria Hospital and the Santa Elena Clinic in nearby town Torremolinos.
Stepping out
Home to a number of local folk and religious celebrations throughout the year, especially during the summer months, Alhaurín el Grande hosts a Flamenco festival in June, a folklore celebration in July and the internationally recognised El Portón Festival of Jazz in August. Although it retains its rural nature at almost every turn, Alhaurín el Grande features a busy town centre where diners can find tempting menus at restaurants throughout its streets and plazas such as El Postillión and Los Candiles. Those in search of a wider selection of eateries and bars need not look too far as a short drive will put them in the heart of any number of neighbouring towns such as Coín, Fuengirola and Mijas.
In addition to a municipal sports complex, the town also provides a number of athletics facilities including nature trails and rounds at either the Alhaurín Golf Club or Lauro Golf Club, both offering unique playing experiences. Following in the rural tradition of the town, the two clubs make the most of the area’s many hills and valleys, which provide exceptional views as well as a challenging but enjoyable round of golf. For those interested in the region’s history, Alhaurín el Grande is home to a number of archaeological sites open to visitors, including some examples dating as far back as the Neolithic period.

Guide to Costa Del Sol - Platinum Properties
Guide to the Costa Del Sol
Hugging the coastline of the Costa del Sol, in the region of Andalucia is this little piece of paradise. At the heart of this fast developing centre is a wonderful, quaint marina built with more than 300 berths. There are no high-rise hotels here but ample apartments for rent. The area is undergoing a property boom. Along the waterfront is a wide variety of restaurants and bars, topped with apartments looking out over the boats although there are very few shops in the port. The port was once described as the next Puerto Banus. It has however retained its charm and its quiet environment. The port is flanked by two very long, sandy beaches with their own beach bars. One beach stretches to the left as far as Sabinillas and on to Estepona the other winds round the coast to Sotogrande.
Over the last two years, several new blocks of apartments have been built around the marina which has to some effect closed the port in a little. Property development continues in the area, especially on the other side of the N340 at Los Hidalgos and Duquesa Golf where several new urbanisations have been built.
The main N340 highway passes Duquesa which is accessed by an underpass. On the other side of the road is Duquesa Golf, a wonderful course with views over the sea and its own hotel. Golf villas and apartments line the edge of the course. Property is being built here at an alarming rate. There is an ever-increasing English speaking population here. In the summer months there is a tiny street market along the waterside offering all manner of local goods. The waterfront to the marina is closed to normal traffic making it a safe haven for children.
More info on Puerto Duquesa go to www.platinumpropertiesspain.com
As well as modern pleasure vessels, the port is still home to a working fishing fleet and daily catches are landed here. There are all marine facilities here including storage. The port offers very reasonably priced berths although there is often a long waiting list. There are also refuelling facilities for boats in the port. The boatyard offers renovation space and a lifting service.
Other facilities in the area include;A campsite and caravan park on the N340 Highway about 1 mile from Duquesa Port.A petrol station on the N340 Highway about half a mile from Duquesa Port.Sunday market and car boot sale at Sabinillas, two minutes walk from the port.Specialist golf holidays based in the port.

Polaris World Spain - A Review
Anyone with a slight interest in off plan will be familiar with the name Polaris World. The publicity is unavoidable and it is being pushed everywhere. Up until now, I’ve let it go over my head because it just all seems so overwhelming. I mean this project is huge and involves creating a dream lifestyle concept. So, a few days ago I decided to do a bit of research just to see what the hype was about and to find out just what is Polaris World. Having read through the entire blurb, I am desperate to see it in the flesh and I am currently planning a trip.
How did it all begin?
Polaris was set up in 2001 by Pedro Garcia, with the backing of various other investors.
Where is Polaris World?
It is located on the Costa Calida near the beaches of Mar Menor and the city of Murcia.
What is the concept?
My own interpretation of the concept is that Polaris World is pioneering a lifestyle which will become the norm for our children. It is about 21st century living and will no doubt serve as a model for future projects. It seems that the emphasis is placed on creating an ideal lifestyle where the priorities are balanced. This lifestyle focuses on facilitating your life whilst you can enjoy your leisure time by providing services such as cleaning, gardening, grocery delivery and pretty much all the mundane tasks which we begrudge doing. Some might call it a millionaire’s lifestyle but without a millionaire’s price tag. Polaris World allows ordinary people to enjoy the pleasures in life that they have worked hard for and deserve. I can see it as becoming a safe place where residents enjoy a high standard of living.
Who is going to live there?
They have offices promoting all over the world so Polaris World resorts will become a truly international places to live.
How is it organised?
Polaris World is made up of seven resorts:
Mar Menor Golf Resort
El Valle Golf Resort
La Loma Resort
Hacienda Riquelme Golf Resort
La Torre Golf Resort
Terrazas de La Torre Golf Resort
Mar Menor II Golf Resort
With so many resorts, where do I start?
Mar Menor Golf Resort
The first Polaris World Resort covers an area of 700.000 m2 and has 750 properties. It had a nine-hole golf course, which is being extended to 18, and is located close to the sea. Facilities include:
Swimming pools
Country club
5 star hotel
Restaurants
Medical centre
Hairdresser/beauty salon
Supermarket
Mar Menor II Golf Resort
An extension to the original Mar Menor Golf Resort, all properties on Mar Menor II are front line golf and can enjoy all the benefits of the original resort plus the 18 hole Nicklaus Design golf course.
El Valle Golf Resort
Surrounded by countryside, it covers an area of 1.100.000 m2 and boasts an 18 hole par 71 golf course designed by Nicklaus Design. There are 369 luxury villas and 319 apartments. Facilities include:
Themed restaurants, bars and pubs
Business Centre and function room
Swimming pool complex
Tennis courts
24h cash points
Five star hotel complex with 150 rooms
Spa and Fitness Centre
Restaurant service and home shopping
La Loma Resort
A resort designed with sport lovers in mind. It has a Nicklaus Design golf course, a Sport Centre with 15 tennis courts, 2 multi-sport fields, one football pitch, one Olympic swimming pool, one multi-sport indoor pavilion and a fully equipped gymnasium. 470 properties cover an area of 525.000 square metres.
Hacienda Riquelme Golf Resort
Covering an area of 1.353.000 m2, there are 1,864 apartments all in keeping with the buildings in the area in order to maintain the original charm. The emphasis is on comfort and facilities include:
24 hour security service, with CCTV and control of access to the resort
Home catering and shopping.
A team of home decorating specialists and gardening consultants at your disposal.
Latest generation technology.
An integrated telecommunications service offers access to telephone, television and Internet.
Restaurants, delicatessen, gymnasiums, golf club, beauty salon, saunas, Turkish bath, laundry.
Medical centre and pharmacies.
La Torre Golf Resort
Covering an area of 1,400,000 m2, there are 2,648 properties comprising 446 villas, 1,728 apartments and 474 townhouses. The town centre is arranged around a lake and offers the following services:
Supermarket, with home delivery service
Commercial premises and boutiques
Travel agency. • Function room
Bank
Beauty salon and hairdresser
Spa and Fitness Centre
Gymnasium
Club House
Restaurants
Fast Food
Spike bar
Fun Pub drinks bar
Wine tasting and tobacconists
Drinks and ice cream terrace
Juice and milkshake bar
English tavern
Themed restaurants, bars and pubs
Business Centre and function room
Swimming pool complex
Tennis courts
24h cash points
5 star hotel complex with 150 rooms
Medical Centre
School
Children’s play areas
Terrazas de La Torre Golf Resort
This brand new resort is situated next to La Torre Resort. There are 4000 properties in total, covering an area of 1,555,129m2. The prices are unbeatable ranging from approximately €118,500-€241,100. They will also enjoy an 18 hole Nicklaus Design golf course. Residents will enjoy all the facilities of La Torre Golf Resort.
Can I use the facilities on all resorts?
I did wonder about this one but apparently there will be a shuttle bus service to transport you from one resort to the next so that you can benefit from each resort’s facilities.
The creator obviously had a dream when creating Polaris World and if this dream goes according to plan, it could prove to be the ultimate in modern day living. Admittedly, I was a bit sceptical about the whole concept and it just seemed too idealistic. However, having trawled the internet for information, I am captivated by what is on offer for very affordable prices.
Many of the sites that I looked at trying to promote Polaris World were playing on the old sun and sand clichés that you can get anywhere in Spain. I believe that even by taking the magic sun element out of the equation you are still left with a fantastic self contained place to live or holiday. I even thought that it might be quite isolated but it is actually near the region’s major city of Murcia.
Initially, as a non-golf player the golfing element did put me off. However, I think that you can enjoy a wonderful leisure filled lifestyle without ever having to step foot on a golf course in Polaris World. I cannot find any more excuses not to like it and I find it impossible to be negative about it. I personally am sold on the following factors:
All properties have central heating!! Having spent two winters on the Costa del Sol, this is a must have which is rarely catered for at this price level.
The space around properties. Another luxury which you are hard pushed to find along the concrete Costas.
The attention to detail which unfortunately is often overlooked when buying off plan at affordable prices.
The leisure filled lifestyle accessible to ordinary people not just millionaires.
The services on hand which free up your time to do the things that you really want to do.
The planning, pride and priorities of Polaris World.
I really like this futuristic concept and I could see myself living somewhere like this. I imagine it will be safe, healthy and clean. Polaris World’s concept is likely to become a model used in other European countries. From what I have read so far, I am inspired and keen to check it out and I hope to do so in the near future.

Polaris World Resort information.
This Resort is designed for the ultimate experience of freedom and nature, one that provides an incomparable feeling of well-being generated by the rational layout of its flanked avenues, its perfectly incorporated plant life, and its low construction density. It all comes together around a late 19th Century, colonial-style country house. It was the home of the Riquelme Family, descendants of Guillén Riquelme, a noble knight who accompanied King Alfonso X the Learned on his conquest of Murcia. It has been restored to preserve the country house tradition of the Murcia of yore, and to maintain the balance between the romanticism of the past and the modernism of the future. The house has been recreated as it existed in those times, with gardens of the area´s native plants, which intertwine with the rays of sunlight that shine over this wonderful land of Murcia. The development project was carried out by EDSA and F&M Arquitectos, firms that leave their hallmark in each of the Resort´s details.A bit of history...Located on the estate that bears its name, this Resort is accessed by the Avileses to Sucina Road. It features a noble, late 19th Century colonial-style building, which was the retreat of the Riquelme family. The Riquelme´s were the descendants of Guillén Riquelme, a noble knight who accompanied King Alfonso X the Learned on his conquest of Murcia.Affixed to the facade of this palace-house, his coat of arms displays the ornamental figures that identify and distinguish the noble family to which he belonged, and the other which he joined by marriage. The helm and crest of its minor shield over a field and a large barracks represent the distinguished warrior to whom they belonged.A carriage roadway that ran through a beautiful palm grove provided access to the spacious central courtyard, which was lined with buildings devoted to the maintenance of the Riquelme Estate and services for its noble residents. Fountains of musical fresh waters, galleries of arches supported by open columns like those of a monastic cloister, a fortified tower of permeable walls, a beautiful palm grove, large windows from which to lean out and look at endless landscapes, are the elements that made this estate a place for rest and enjoyment. The Riquelme family was noted for the patronage of the arts they practiced over many generations. One of the artists they patronized was the famous Murcian sculptor Francisco Salzillo. The museum in Murcia that bears his name is home to many of his works of art, such as the world famous nativity scene commissioned by Jesualdo Riquelme y Fontes for his Murcia Palace. Another patronized artist circa 1603 was sculptor Cristóbal de Salazar, who created the marble sepulchres for the great Riquelme chapel in the San Francisco de Murcia Convent.

Polaris World Mar menor
Enjoy a dream come trueThis Resort was initially conceived with a surface area of 700,000 m² and 750 homes. The homes have been delivered, and all services are operational and currently being enjoyed by the residents. The success of this project led us to expand it by an additional 885,000 m², with new home offerings, greater services, and more land for parks, sports and leisure. The pioneer resort from Polaris World currently comprises 750 brightly-coloured detached villas situated just 10 minutes away from the magnificent beaches and waters of the Mar Menor lagoonNature, the sun and the beach represent the required factors that come together to create the perfect setting for this Resort. A setting that is unique, headed by an 18-hole golf course that runs along the entire complex, and includes hairdressing services, bars, restaurants, a fitness centre, a travel agency, swimming pools and a five-star Intercontinental hotel. At the heart of the complex the ‘Town Centre’ houses all types of amenities along with the 5 star InterContinental Hotel & Spa with bars, restaurants and swimming pool. Thanks to the success of the project, an extension is underway to offer additional properties and extend the golf course and leisure areas. But that´s not all. Mar Menor Golf Resort is in a truly privileged location: while only five minutes away from the beach, it also has excellent access to the region´s most important cities, such as Murcia and Cartagena.
